Strofa 1 Deșteaptă-te, române, din somnul cel de moarte, (Awake, Romanian, from the sleep of death) În care te-adânciră barbarii de tirani! (Into which barbarous tyrants have plunged you!) Acum ori niciodată croiește-ți altă soarte, (Now or never, shape a different destiny,) La care să se-nchine și cruzii tăi dușmani! (Before which even your cruel enemies will bow!)

Strofa 2 Acum ori niciodată să dăm dovezi la lume (Now or never, let us show the world) Că-n aste mâni mai curge un sânge de român, (That Romanian blood still flows in these hands,) Și că-n a noastre piepturi păstrăm cu fală-un nume (And that within our hearts we proudly bear a name) Triumfător în lupte, un nume de Traian! (Victorious in battle—the name of Trajan!)

Strofa 3 Priviți, mărețe umbre, Mihai, Ștefan, Corvine, (Look, mighty shades—Michael, Stephen, Corvinus—) Româna națiune, ai voștri strănepoți, (At the Romanian nation, your descendants:) Cu brațele armate, cu focul vostru-n vine, (With arms in hand, with your fire in their veins,) „Viață-n libertate ori moarte!” strigă toți. (They all cry, “Life in freedom, or death!”)

Strofa 4 Preoți, cu crucea-n frunte! căci oastea e creștină, (Priests, with the cross at the forefront! For the army is Christian,) Deviza-i libertate și scopul ei preasfânt. (Its motto is freedom, and its purpose most sacred.) Murim mai bine-n luptă, cu glorie deplină, (Better to die in battle, in the fullness of glory,) Decât să fim sclavi iarăși în vechiul nost’ pământ! (Than to be slaves again upon our ancient land!)
